Athlete To Coach

Diana Caimey was one of a trio of athletes who received grants from south Ayrshire Sports Council. Her grant was for attending and passing Level 2 UKA all events course at East Kilbride and Grangemouth. Diana was fast tracked to Level 2 due to having 10 years experience as a high quality athlete. She is now with forma coach Bill Beattie working with a squad of 25 to 35 young female sprinters ranging in age 9 years to 15 years. Diana is only the second ex Seaforth athlete along with Ricky Taylor to come back to the Club as a full time coach.

Diana joined Ayr Seaforth as a 12 year old sprinter in 1982 and was coached by Bill Hem-ton and Bill Beattie. She progressed through the junior ranks in the 100m, 200m and 4xlOO relays reaching National Standard. She was part of the Seaforth under 15 relay squad which finished 4th in the final of the AAAs junior relay championships in Birmingham. They were the only Scottish Club represented, having gone down as Scottish Champions. At age 17 she moved to Glen Harrowers squad concentrating in the 400m. She still put in good performances at 200m, achieving a personal best of 25.45s. In the under 20 age group she was West District Champion, runner-up in the West v. East match and third in the Scottish Championships, all at 400m.

Her final achievement before retiring at the ripe old age of 21 was as part of the best ever Seaforth seniors sprint relay squad. The year they broke up they won the championship trophy at the prestigious Octavian relays meeting. There was a huge entry of 43 teams in the senior event including 8 teams from Edinburgh Woolen Mill.

Diana hopes to make a comeback this year in the Masters age group over 100m.
