Ayr Seaforth’s talented trio of junior endurance athletes travelled south at the weekend for the first of the McCain UK Cross Challenge races in Liverpool. Kirstin Oakley, Louise Hill Stirling and Finlay Rae all braved sub-zero temperatures with the rest of the UK’s elite endurance athletes in Sefton Park. Under 13 athlete, Kirstin Oakley had an excellent debut on the national cross-country stage when she took 5th place over the 3 kilometre race, just narrowly missing out on 4th spot. Louise Hill Stirling found the going somewhat tougher. Her 4.4 kilometre race incorporated the European Cross Country trial and featured the cream of British female endurance running. The Girvan athlete finished in 86th place in a very strong field. Finlay Rae encountered a similarly quality field in the Under 17 Men’s race over 5.5 kilometres. The Belmont Academy pupil finished in an excellent 14th place and was second-placed 15 year old.

Club members were due to return to the stadium for training on Tuesday evening this week.
It was a somewhat under-strength Ayr Seaforth contingent who travelled to Cumbernauld for the National Cross Country Relay Championships. A number of late call offs meant that Seaforth were without some key junior and senior athletes. However, those who made trip all gave an excellent account of themselves. Once again it was Under 13 female junior athlete, Kirstin Oakley, who was turning heads on a national stage. The 12 year old Prestwick athlete produced another stunning opening leg over the tough 2.5 kilometre course to finish 17 seconds clear of the second placed athlete and produce the 3rd fastest time of the day of all female junior athletes. Team mates Emma Vallely (Under 15) and Sarah Cassells (under 17) fought hard but slipped to 20th place in the closing stages. The B team produced a very solid performance to take 25th place. Lisa Rennie showed her continuing improving form and fitness to take 13th place on the first leg. She handed over to Louisa Kelly. The Troon athlete who was competing in only her 2nd major cross country race put in an excellent performance and looks an exciting prospect for the future. The team was anchored by Katie Sprang who ran a strong Under 17 leg to bring them home in the top half of the field.
In the Boys race there were debuts at the National relays for Under 13 athletes Jonathon Hendry and Nathan McAllister. Both put in creditable shifts to finish 65th and 76th respectively. They handed over to Andrew Black and Shaun Rennie who pulled the teams up to 57th and 66th. The Under 17 leg saw Finlay Rae claw back an incredible 24 places to bring the A team home in 33rd place and record the 4th fastest time of the day. Euan Webster, anchored the B team to 60th place with a strong run and took a minute off of his time from 2009.
In the Women’s race Louise Hill Stirling was the sole Seaforth athlete. She ran the opening leg of the 4 kilometre course and finished in a commendable 17th place. She was also the 8th fastest Under 20 athlete. The Senior Men’s race saw another strong opening leg from Neil Burnside. The 800m athlete continued his return to fitness to finish in an excellent 22nd place. Team mates Mayeul Ducrot, and Seaforth stalwarts Laurance Baker and Tom McCulloch all had good runs to bring the team home in 58th place.
At the Strathclyde Parkrun at the weekend Toni McIntosh was the first woman home in a time of 19:57 for the 5 kilometre course.
Ayr Seaforth athletes were in top form at the weekend at the Ayrshire Cross Country Relay Championships at Beach Park, Irvine. They took a massive 7 titles from 10 races, including a clean sweep of the junior male championships and a senior women title for the first time in many years. As usual, it was the youngsters who were first to race and the Seaforth Under 11 Boys team of Daniel Martin, Oliver Smith and Steven Martin had a comfortable victory in the opening race. The Under 13 Boys team had a much tighter race. The opening leg was run by Nathan McAllister. Jonathon Hendry ran a very strong second leg to haul Seaforth into second. However, it was a storming final leg by Connor Gracie who overcame a large deficit to give the Under 13 Boys an excellent victory. The Under 15 Boys trio of Shaun Rennie, James Pettigrew and Andrew Black were in top form. All ran strongly to give the Seaforth team a large winning margin. The Under 17 team of Euan Webster, Scott Jones and Finlay Rae completed a clean sweep of the junior male titles with Finlay recording the fastest lap time of the day over the 2.5 kilometre course.
The female races saw the Under 13 girls team take the first female title of the day. An excellent opening leg win by Lisa Rennie was followed by a very strong cross country debut from Lara Carey to preserve a lead. Kirstin Oakley ran the anchor leg and for the second week in a row was the fastest female junior athlete. The under 15 race saw another debut in the opening leg. Louisa Kelly made an impressive start to her club athletics career. In her first race in a Seaforth vest she took second place. Team mates Leigh McLevy and Emma Vallely ran well to hold on to second place. In the Under 17 race Sarah Cassells returned to form with a first class opening leg to give Seaforth a small lead. Solid runs from Lauren Goldie and Katie Sprang helped the team to a well-deserved gold medal.
The Senior Women’s race was possibly the most exciting of the day. Opening legs from twin sisters Laura Wallace and Toni McIntosh left Louise Hill Stirling with almost a 2 minute deficit to rivals Kilmarnock. However, a stunning performance saw her overhaul the Kilmarnock final leg athlete with just over 400 metres to go to give Seaforth their first Ayrshire Senior female title in many years. The Senior men unfortunately suffered the reverse fate. A fantastic opening leg from Neil Burnside gave Seaforth a slender lead. Under 20 athlete Andrew Rae kept them in second place and Barry Duddy ran a strong third leg but narrowly slipped into 3rd place. They were on course to take a bronze medal only to see Laurence Baker caught by the Girvan athlete with less than 100 metres to the finishing line.

The 2010-11 cross country season got underway at the weekend with the West District relays at Rouken Glen Park in Glasgow. Ayr Seaforth managed to field a team in all four races for the first time in many years. It was the young female athletes who got the racing of the day underway and Seaforth starlet Kirstin Oakley got the team off to a flying start over the 2.5 kilometre course. Not only did she win the opening leg by a 10 second margin but she recorded the fastest leg of all female junior athletes on the day. There were strong debuts from Under 13 athlete Christie Hutton on the opening leg and Under 15 athlete Leigh McLevy on the second leg. A fast run saw the ever-improving Girvan athlete take several places to bring home the Seaforth squad in 10th place, their highest team finish of the day. A smaller than expected group of Ayr Seaforth members took part in the prestigious annual young athletes Pitreavie trophy meeting which started at 10am and finished at 6pm.
With over 300 young athletes competing, it was an achievement to reach the finals of the events on Sunday but the small elite band from Seaforth enjoyed a successful day of trophy wins.
In the U17 men's group, Wallace Graham made an encouraging return to competition after a lengthy spell of injury with a fine third in the final of the 100 metres. All day there were strong headwinds of minus 4.6 to 4.8 which negated any chance of fast times.
In the U15 boys’ javelin, James Armstrong was an impressive winner with 41 metres 55, then recorded 1m 55 in the high jump for third place and rounded off a good day in the 80 metres hurdles finishing fourth in 14.79 secs.
U13 boy Nathan MacAlister ran well into a strong wind for fourth in the final of the 100m (15.49).
U11 boy Fraser Angus produced two outstanding sprints in the final of the 150m and 75m (both personal bests) finishing second in both races almost dead heating with the same young athlete from Edinburgh: 150 metres (22.19) and 75 metres (11.67).
Sophie Dunlop finished well to take third place in the U15 girls’ hurdles (12.87) again into a strong headwind.
In the U13 girls, Ailie Shanks ran well in the 100m final to finish fourth in the ‘A’ final but no times available and also finished fourth in the 200m ‘B’ final (30.05) when still very windy). She also shot putted 4m 94.
Charlotte Crossland made the final of the U13’s 70m hurdles finishing an excellent fourth. She also ran well in the 200m (heats 31.5) and cleared 3m 36 in the long jump.
In the U11 girls, Jennifer McVeigh and Katie McAlpine had a busy and successful day.
Jennifer was second in the 75 metres ‘B’ final (12.48 ), sixth in the long jump (3m 06) and seventh in the shot putt (4m 30).
Katie was fifth in the 75 metres ‘A’ final (12.61). In her heat she ran 12.56, 150 metres (heat second 25.61 ) and was sixth in the long jump (3m 02).
Seaforth athletes will now have a quiet period of training at the Old Racecourse Playing fields on Tuesdays and Thursdays while the track at Dam Park is being resurfaced and repainted.
Training at the Old Racecourse started on Tuesday this week at 6.30pm until 8.30pm.
Teenage Ayr Seaforth star Rachel Hunter made history at the Cowal Highland Games in Dunoon.
Rachel, 16, was the youngest ever athlete to compete in the heavy events.
And she celebrated by winning five out of six events to lift the gold medal for finishing first overall and receiving the David Allan Sangster Memorial Trophy.
Rachel, a pupil at Kyle Academy, is fast establishing herself as one of Scotland's most promising throws athletes.
Wearing her Pride of Scotland tartan kilt, she won the throwing the stone, Scots hammer (in a new Games record of 27m 58), weight for height, weight for distance and shot putt. She was also third in her first ever competition attempt at tossing the caber.
Proud Seaforth secretary Glen Harrower said: “For people from an older generation, Rachel's outstanding achievements brought back wonderful memories of a movie called ‘Geordie’ starring the late Bill Travers about a young Scottish heavy athlete who, from a boy to a young man, dreamt of Olympic glory.
“He won the gold medal in the hammer which just happens to be one of Rachel’s best events.
“Saturday was the beginning of young Rachel Hunter's Olympic dream.”

Ayr Seaforth athletes stood on the medal podium 10 times during the two days of the Scottish open age group championships at Scotstoun last weekend.
And there was also an exciting superteams competition with an under 13 girls team from Seaforth finishing an excellent ninth from 29 teams.
Highlight of the Scottish Championships was the double gold medals won by 15-year-old Caroline George in the under 17 women`s 100 metres (12.52 secs) and the 200 metres (25 secs).
Caroline won both sprints with ease which will prepare her for an even tougher task this weekend when she travels to Bedford for the English AAA under 17 championships.
Three silver medals were won by Aaron Gray (U17 men`s 400m in a pb 51.56), Aileen Rennie (U17 women’s javelin 34.20) and James Armstrong (U15 boys’ javelin pb 41.97).
Five bronze medals were claimed by Andrew Murphy who had a hat-trick in the under 17’s 100m hurdles (14.36 pb), pole vault (3.20) and shot putt (13.55).

The 3k (1.9 mile) family fun starts at 6.30pm, entry fee £1 with medal to all finishers. Registration from 5.30pm.

Ayr Seaforth athletes enjoyed a weekend of highs and lows.
The highs came from four young members who helped Scotland finish second in Ireland in the annual Celtic Games against Wales, Athletics Ireland and Ulster.
In the under 16 event, Finlay Rae (age 15) was second in the 1500 metres in 4.11.30 while James Gaffney (age 15) was second in the discus with a personal best 41.96.
In the under 20 contest, Caroline George (age 15) ran a season’s best to finish third in the 100m in 12.25 secs, the same time as the second placed Irish women. Caroline also ran in the 4x100m relay which was second and the 4x300m relay which was third.
Rachel Hunter (age 16) was third in the discus with 32.11 and fourth in the hammer with 44.88.
Fifteen-year-old Andrew Murphy produced five personal bests at Stoke (England) in the UK under 17 combined events/decathlon championships and won a silver medal with a massive 5612 points, only 25 behind the eventual winner.
Andrew`s individual events were: 100m (12.5), long jump (6.07 pb), shot putt (12.82), high jump (1.62), 400m (55.15 pb), 100m hurdles (14.47 pb), discus (31.37), pole vault (3.23), javelin (37.24) and 1500m (4.49.0 pb).
The lows came when only ten athletes (senior men/under 20 and under 17 men) finished last in the third match of the Scottish League Division One at Wishaw on Sunday.
With five events not covered due to lack of numbers, this was a very disappointing result and with only one more league match left (August 29 at Grangemouth), Seaforth are facing relegation back to Division Two.
Sunday’s points: Central AC 345 pts (24 match points after three matches), Aberdeen 300 (21), Pitreavie 246 (11), Edinburgh 244 (16), Lasswade 220 (14), Arbroath 218 (12), Shettleston 213 (6), Seaforth136 (4).

Ayrshire Harriers just failed in their bid to reach the UK Young Athletes final when they finished third in the Scottish final at Grangemouth on Sunday.
Despite an outstanding effort, they finished 62 points behind second placed Giffnock North who will travel to Manchester with winners Edinburgh AC on September.4 and 5 for the final.
With more than 70 athletes competing, and only five events not covered due to late call-offs and unavailability of some key athletes, the difference in points could easily have cost Ayrshire a trip to Manchester.
In the final points analysis, the Ayrshire females finished second, 31 points in front of Giffnock North. The Ayrshire males were third, 94 points behind Giffnock mainly due to a greatly weakened under 13 boys team.
However, there were still many winning individual performances from the Ayrshire athletes and relay teams.
Although they just missed out on a trip to Manchester there is always next year to dream about and plan for.
Final points: Edinburgh 834, Giffnock North 742, Ayrshire Harriers 679½, Team Hippo 655½, Inverness 524½, Victoria Park Glasgow 479½, Pitreavie 412½, Central 404½.

Two Ayr Seaforth athletes helped Scottish Schools finish third in the Home Countries Schools International at Scotstoun last Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Senior National Championships and Commonwealth trials together with the Scottish National Junior 4 x100m Relay Championships took place at Pitreavie.
There was a disappointing entry from Seaforth senior athletes with only two females, both under 20s.
Meghan Logue, 18, ran in the senior ‘B’ 400m final in 62.00 secs while 16-year-old Rachel Hunter was unlucky not to collect two bronze medals in the shot putt, finishing fourth with a personal best 11m95. She was fourth in the hammer with 42m22.

Ayrshire's combined young athletes team have qualified for the Scottish final at Grangemouth on Sunday, August 1.
They turned in their best performance of the season to finish second in the third and final meeting on Sunday. And that left them second overall to put them in good shape for the final.
With many athletes missing due to holidays, the managers did a great job to produce such a team from Ayr Seaforth, Kilmarnock Harriers and North Ayrshire AC.
Sunday’s match took place in gales, rain, hailstones and even some sunshine.

The Under 13 Girls race saw Kirstin Oakley once again establish her young endurance pedigree with an excellent 8th place over 2500m. Ayr Seaforth will have five age group teams in the prestigious Scottish Indoor League finals.
Competing against the best in Scotland at the Kelvin Sports Hall, Glasgow, on Sunday, March 14 will be the under 11 boys, under 11 girls, under 17 men, under 17 women and under 20 women.
The top five clubs qualified in age groups under 13 to under 20 while the top six went through at under 11.
Seaforth’s under 15 girls were unlucky not to make it after finishing sixth from 42 teams. But they were hampered by fixture clashes with the National Cross Country Championships which were held a day before the final indoor match.
With full strength teams, the five should do well in the finals. For those who failed to qualify, there is an added 4 x 200 metres relay to look forward to.
Seaforth secretary Glen Harrower said: “Our long and successful relay tradition willensure teams will be entered in all or most age groups on the day.”
Final placings (with match points after two matches): Under 11 boys: 1. Giffnock North ‘A’ 39pts; 2. Law & District 39; 3. Seaforth ‘A’ 38; 4. Central ‘A’ 38; 5. Giffnock North ‘B’ 38; 6. Kilbarchan 35. Seaforth ‘B’ were 20th from 27 teams with 21 points.

It was a particularly disappointing result for the under 20 men who had only two athletes available, considering they were winners last year.
Ayr Seaforth had their strongest contingent for many years at the National Cross Country Championships last weekend. A total of 25 athletes made the trip to a frosty Callendar park in Falkirk. For the third consecutive year the club came away with a medal. In addition the club narrowly missed out on a team medal for the first time in many years. It was Under 15 athlete Finlay Rae who once again secured some silverware for Seaforth as he took bronze medal over 4 kilometres in the boys race, being beaten on the line for silver. He has now medalled in 3 consecutive championships, having won the Under 13 Boys title in 2008. A number of athletes were making their debut at the National Championships. These included under 13 athletes Laura Meader, Andrew Black, James Pettigrew, Connor Gracie and Jamie Colquhoun and senior athletes Mayeul Ducrot and John Hayes. However, the outstanding debut of the day came from 11 year old Kirstin Oakley who put in a fantastic performance to take 7th place in the Under 13 Girls race over 3.2 kilometres in her first year in the age group. She is undoubtedly an athlete to watch out for the future.
There were further good individual performances from Emma Vallely who finished 23rd in the Under 15 girls race and Louise Hill-Stirling who finished 26th in the Under 17 women’s race. Frustrated Ayr Seaforth were left idle on Sunday when arctic weather conditions wiped out the Scottish Indoor League at the Kelvin Hall.
Dozens of the club’s promising young athletes had been looking forward to bringing in the New Year with another rousing show at the Glasgow venue.
But they were left kicking their heels when organisers called off the event on Saturday afternoon.
Disappointed club secretary Glen Harrower revealed: “I got a phone call at 5.30pm out of the blue to tell me the meeting was off due to poor weather on the approaches into Glasgow.
“I think organisers were concerned that snow was falling on top of treacherous approach roads and made the decision to postpone the meeting.
“It is very disappointing for all concerned at the club as we had been looking forward to building on our excellent performances at the first meeting.
“I find it puzzling that the Old Firm match was able to go ahead at Parkhead while at the same time conditions were considered safe for an indoor athletics meeting in the same city.
“I think there was a bit of panic behind the decision. Since when did everything have to stop because roads are not gritted?”
Seaforth had been looking to build on their excellent show at the opening meeting the week before Christmas. The under 11 boys and under 20 women led the way by winning their age groups.
Teams at under 11, under 13, under 15, under 17 and under 20 were set to contest Sunday’s second meeting which will now be re-arranged.
Top teams from three meetings will go forward to the league final at the Kelvin Hall in March.
She's a familiar sight pounding the streets of Ayr and she’s running into the New Year with the dream of making the Commonwealth Games.
Gritty Toni McIntosh ran EVERY day during 2009 and never tired of racing away with medals.
In her most successful year ever, she swept the board with three Scottish championships and became the first person in the country to do so.
Toni, 30, even wandered to Spain and won the Majorca Marathon. She celebrated with a midnight run and then was up at the crack of dawn for another stint before flying home.
She ran a staggering 59 races and won the majority of them. And she brought home Ayr Seaforth’s first senior medal from the National Cross County Championships when she won silver.
Toni’s hot run continued over the festive spell with a hat-trick of back to back wins.
She was first female in the Glasgow 5k Parkrun, did likewise in the 10k Turkey Trot along Ayr beach and then ran off with the top ladies prize in the Cambuslang 10k road race.
Toni laughs: “People probably think I’m mad but I believe they are missing out on so much if they don’t run.
“I had a bad patch before the start of last year and then decided to model myself on the legendary Ron Hill who ran every day.
“I decided to go one better and run twice a day, every day except Sunday, when I would do a longer run. I’m out first thing in the morning before work and then fit in another when I get home.
“I can’t imagine not running. I briefly thought about retiring next year but then realised I couldn’t.
“My dream is to run in the Commonwealth Games so I need to keep in shape and run a good time in the trials at the London Marathon in April.”
Toni went secret service to record the furthest travelled win of her career.
She explained: “I trained so hard for the Dublin Marathon but then took unwell on the course and was sick. I had never before pulled out of a race and I suppose I could have walked to the finish but I was so low.
“I was desperate to do a marathon after doing all the preparation and searched around to find the next one on the calendar.
“It was in Majorca so I headed out there but didn’t tell anyone I was going for the race. I won to make it all worthwhile but was determined not to break my schedule of running twice a day.
“So after a party in the pub following the race, I went out at midnight for a run and then did the same again in the morning before catching my flight home.”
When not racing the streets, Toni works from home as a sports massage therapist. Now she is linking up with top Ayr physio Andy Callaghan.
And she is planning to set up jogging groups to encourage people to get active and fit.
Ayr runner Toni McIntosh rounded off her most successful ever year with a trio of wins over the festive period.
On Chrismas morning, she travelled to Glasgow to take part in the Christmas 5k parkrun. The course had to be changed due to the weather but 30 hardy runners turned out and Toni finished first female and second overall.
Then she headed to the annual Ayrodynamic Turkey Trot which attracted 250 runners on Boxing Day.
This race also fell victim to the weather as the promenade was treacherously icy, forcing the organisers to move the event to the beach for safety.
Undeterred, Toni completed the course in 37.33 to finish eighth overall and first female. Rising star Gillian Geates was first V45 in 47.22 despite struggling with a knee injury. Lawrence Baker was first V50 in 39.24.
The 5k race was won by Ross Bark (Ronhill Cambuslang) in 17.33. Sarah Cassells, an Ayr Seaforth and Ayrodynamic junior, was first junior female in 21.56. Seaforth's Ewan Webster was first male junior in 21.08.
In the 10k, there was an exciting finish in the men's race when David McNamee outsprinted Thomas Hearle on the finish line after running side by side. He won in 33.36.
Toni was back in action on Sunday at Cambuslang’s 10k road race. Yet again, the weather made the course unrunnable so it was changed to a cross country race around a snow covered field.
Again though, Toni rose to the challenge and finished clear first in the female race. Another hardy Seaforth runner, Barry Duddy, followed closely behind.
Ayrodynamic will be hosting a number of races throughout the year. Any aspiring athletes can put the following dates in their diary.
Duathlon (Auchincruive): April 18, Aquathon (Prestwick): May 22, Triathlon (Doonfoot): August 8; Autumn Aquathon (Prestwick): September 11.
