Dec 16 2011: Ayr Seaforth Athletes Win Three Medals at West District Cross Country

A small but hardy group of Ayr Seaforth athletes headed to Irvine for the West District Cross Country Championships.

The 12 athletes who braved the weather brought home two individual medals and a team medal.

The performance of the day belonged to Kirstin Oakley. The 13-year-old Prestwick athlete returned to top form after a disappointing outing in Liverpool two weeks previously. She romped home with a gritty performance to not only take the under 15 girls’ title but beat all the under 17 athletes as well.

In the same race, Lisa Rennie struggled with a recent viral illness to finish 19th while Louisa Kelly continued to improve after injury to finish 23rd. The trio earned a well deserved bronze team medal.

In the under 13 girls' race, Siobhan Rae was Seaforth's sole competitor but finished a commendable 40th.

Louise Hill-Stirling was also the sole senior female athlete competing. The Irish internationalist demonstrated that she is returning to good shape with an excellent fifth place in the under 20 women’s race.

The under 17 men’s race saw British triathlete Finlay Rae involved in an early tactical race which resulted in a blistering final kilometre in the mud. The Belmont Academy pupil had to settle for third place after a tight finish, with only six seconds separating the top three.

However, the strong performance sets him up nicely as he heads to Spain for a training camp with the Great Britain Olympic talent triathlon squad.

Earlier in the day, the under 13 trio of Fraser Stirling, Ewan McLevy and Lewis Ross scrapped well over the 3.2k course. Fraser came out on top in 13th with Ewan close behind in 16th and Lewis in 21st. The boys narrowly missed out on a team medal.

Seaforth stalwarts Laurence Baker and Peter Laing tackled the 9.6k course along with West District debutant Alex Dunlop and ran well in a field of over 200 athletes.

Results: under 13 girls: 40. Siobhan Rae 14:52.

Sep 16 2011: Four Ayr Seaforth Members Line Up In Pitreavie Trophy Meeting

Four Ayr Seaforth members competed in the Pitreavie Young Athletes Trophy meeting on Sunday.

This annual fixture is considered to be one of the best young athletes’ competitions of the year and so it proved with many top performances from some of Scotland’s best youngsters.

Seaforth’s star performer was 10-year-old Louise Fraser from Troon who has already set the heather on fire this year with some outstanding sprint results.

She won two trophies, finishing second in the under 11 girls’ 75 metres (11.67 secs) and third in the 150 metres (23.47 secs).

Fraser Angus, 11, has also enjoyed a successful year in his sprint races but is fast developing into an excellent long jumper, an event in which he finished second with 4metres 36.

He was one of the youngest sprinters, reaching the final of the 100 metres where he was fifth in 14.64. In a quality 200 metres, he was third in his heat (29.62 secs).

Fraser will stay in the under 13 boys’ age group next year while many of the boys he competed against on Sunday move up to the under 15s.

Charlotte Crossland, 13, faced stiff competition in the under 15 girls 100 metres where she was fourth in her heat. In the 75 metres hurdles, she was seventh in her heat in 14.10 secs.

Twelve-year-old Katie McAlpine was fifth in her 100 metre heat in 16.23 secs.

Seaforth’s club championships started last week but due to the heavy rain on Tuesday evening, the high jump was postponed until Tuesday this week.

All other events have been completed and final results will be announced next week.

Sep 9 2011: Low Turnout at Final Open Meeting Disappoints Ayr Seaforth Coaches

Ayr Seaforth coaches were disappointed at their club’s low turnout for the final open athletics competition in perfect weather at Dam Park last Wednesday.

Organised by Ayrshire Harriers Clubs Association and supported by South Ayrshire Council, there was an excellent number of athletes from Kilmarnock Harriers and North Ayrshire AC.

However, there were still many encouraging results on the night from Seaforth athletes as the following highlights show:

Females: under 11 girls: 80m: Louise Fraser was fastest overall in an excellent 12.41 secs. Under 15 girls: Ayrshire mile: Kirstin Oakley looked an impressive winner in 5.25.92. Senior women: high jump: Hazel Jamieson continues in good form to win in 1m 60.

Males: under 17 men: 3000m: Finlay Rae was a brave winner in 8.58.83 and just failed to break a long standing under 17 record (8.46) held by Ayrshire athlete Robert Lynch in 1976. Unfortunately, Finlay had to run his own race and had no serious competition with no senior men or under 20 runners in the race.

Under 13 boys: 100m: Fraser Angus was fastest overall in 14.37 and won the long jump with 4m40. 1500m: Ewan McLevy was a clear winner in 5.37.46 and second in the long jump with 4m 06. shot putt: Andrew Peck is fast establishing himself in the throws with a win in the shot (7m14) and also the javelin (18m 37).

Under 11 boys: Daniel Martin was an impressive double winner in 80m (12.39) and in the 600m (1.59.34).

Under 17 men: Andrew Murphy was in top form in the shot putt, winning with 14m41 and a fine second in the high jump with 1m80.

Under 15 boys: high jump: Scott McAnally, just back after injuring his ankle, was a comfortable winner with 1m65.

Senior men: 400m: Andrew McElwee was a clear winner in 52.95.

Seaforth club track and field championships started on Tuesday evening and continue on Thursday evening at Dam Park.

Championships cover all age groups. Competition is for points in all the events to produce a champion and a runner-up in each age group.

Sep 9 2011: Ayr Seaforth’s Sam Revie Stars at the UK School Games

Teenager Sam Revie starred for Scotland at the UK School Games at Sheffield on Saturday.

The 16-year-old Ayr Seaforth flier finished third in the 100 metres in a new personal best 11.06 secs which now ranks him number one in Scotland in the under 17 age group.

Sam, a pupil of Marr College, was also part of the 4x100m Scotland relay team which was third in 42.54 secs.

Scotland returned with five gold, six silver and four bronze medals to finish sixth overall in an event won by the team from London.

Each of the 12 sports included is combined into a four-day games environment designed to replicate the feel of major events such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

The annual event brings together 1600 young people of school age to live together and get the feeling of what it is like to compete at the highest level as athletes.

In August, Sam competed for Scotland at Antrim in the Celtic Games in the 4x100m relay and also in an invitation 100 metres which he won in 11.41 secs.

In July, at the under 18 Scottish Championships, he finished third in both the 100m (11.38 secs) and 200 metres (22.86 secs).

Sam’s coach at Seaforth is Kenny Campbell and he will be delighted and rightly proud that after a successful year of continued improvement, Sam is ranked number one in Scotland on his latest 100 metres performance.

Jul 22 2011: Rachel Hunter and Caroline George Fly the Flag for Ayr Seaforth

Only two Ayr Seaforth female athletes competed in the Scottish senior championships at Scotstoun last weekend – but both did so with great credit.

Seventeen-year-old Rachel Hunter won bronze medals in the hammer (50 metres 37) and shot putt with a personal best of 12 metres 65.

Caroline George, 16, lined up against top senior sprinters in the 100 metres final and finished an excellent fifth in 12.46 secs.

On Sunday, she was seventh in the final of the 200 metres in 25.68, behind Scottish champion and British athlete Lee McConnell (23.49).

Both Rachel (U20) and Caroline (U18) will next compete in their own age group national championships at Scotstoun on July 30.

Also competing in the senior 100 metres final was former Seaforth sprinter/hurdler Laura McGawn (ex-Wellington School) and now an officer in the RAF (PE).

The aspiring heptathlete/muli-events, who is now running with Windsor Slough & Eton, finished fourth in 12.29, just in front of Caroline George in a close finish.

Disappointingly, Seaforth had no under 14 athletes competing at the inaugural new age group championships. As forecast last week, the overall turnout from clubs was low and being in the middle of the school holidays clearly was a major reason.

On Sunday, from six teams entered in the Scottish Junior 4x100m relay championships, Seaforth fielded only three teams which again was very disappointing.

The best team performance came from the under 14 girls team which finished an excellent fourth in the final. The team was Alison Harvey, Katie Vallance, Emily McAlpine and Ailie Shanks.

The under 16 girls team, which finished seventh in the final, was Sarah Paterson, Sophie Dunlop, Alice Arnold and Carolyn Harvey.

Also finishing seventh was the under 16 boys team of Ryan Muir, Scott McAnally, Stephen Mexson and Niall McHugh.

Fixtures: the climax of the Scottish Young Athletes League is on Saturday at Scotstoun where the Ayrshire Young Athletes team from Seaforth, Kilmarnock Harriers and North Ayrshire AC compete in the Scottish Young Athletes League final.

If the Ayrshire team finish second on Saturday they will accompany the leading club and favourites to win, Edinburgh AC, to Birmingham for the UK Young Athletes League final.

The big question for team managers revolves around availability. With a strong team in the boys and girls age groups, under 13, under 15 and under 17, Ayrshire could pull it off.

The team bus leaves Ayr Rail Station car park at 9am, Irvine at 9.30am and Kilmarnock at 9.45am.

Jul 8 2011: Ayr Seaforth Star, Gwen McFarlane Wins Medals at British Masters

Gwen McFarlane, Ayr Seaforth’s multi-talented veteran throws Scottish and British champion over many years made a remarkable return after injury from a fall to medal at the British Masters Track and Field Championships at Birmingham’s Alexandra Stadium.

With little or no training Gwen competed in the W55 age group and produced the following results.

Discus: 1st in 20 metres 57; javelin: 1st in 20.46; hammer: 3rd in 24.26; shot putt: 4th in 7.27.

Gwen recently retired as a PE teacher at Ayr Academy where she encouraged and coached her pupils in athletic events.

Her most successful pupil was Sean Carson who became Scottish under 17 and under 20 javelin champion and Scottish schools javelin champion but was tragically killed in a road accident before he could fulfil his great potential.

Gwen is an inspiration to all of Seaforth’s aspiring throws athletes.

Also competing at Birmingham was Irvine Athletic Club’s remarkable veteran sprinter John McGarry who completed a double gold in the M60 age group with wins in the 100 metres (13.16 secs) and 200m (26.77 secs) to become British Masters sprint champion. John competes for Seaforth in masters sprints in league competitions.

Special mention for another remarkable veteran athlete – 74-year-old Willie Kenny who lived in Girvan before emigrating to New Zealand.

Willie returns to Scotland every year when he can to compete in major and minor track races: 800m, 1500m, 3000m and 3000m steeplechase.

Competing at the British Masters, he finished second in the M70-75’s 800 metres. Willie was at Dam Park last month for an open meeting, running the 3000 metres in 14.09.65.

lTHREE of Seaforth’s elite young female athletes competed well for Victoria Park/ Glasgow senior women’s team on Sunday at Wigan in the UK Women’s League.

The outstanding result came from 17-year-old Rachel Hunter who won the hammer with a personal best throw of 52.93 and followed with a first in the ‘B’ shot putt in 11.55 (finishing second overall in the shot ).

Aileen Rennie, 17, was second in the javelin with an excellent 35.26.

Sixteen-year-old Caroline George was first in the 200m ‘B’ (25.94), second in the 100m ‘B’ (12.93) and was in the winning 4x100m relay team.

Mar 10 2011: Scottish Schools XC Champs 2011

Ayr Seaforth had a strong contingent of athletes at the Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships in Irvine last weekend with a total of 17 athletes participating. Kirstin Oakley claimed a second national title this season in emphatically winning the Under 14 Girls race. This rounded off a first class cross country season for the Prestwick Academy athlete which had seen her win all the major cross country titles in Scotland and finish 4th place overall in the UK McCain’s Cross Country Challenge. The previous week she had finished in 9th place in the final race in Birmingham. In the same race at Irvine, training partner Lisa Rennie put in an excellent performance to take 9th place. Finlay Rae demonstrated that he had fully recovered from illness to take runner-up spot in the 15-17 years Boys race. In what was undoubtedly the most exciting race of the day, the Belmont Academy pupil was out-sprinted by Somalian athlete Ahmed Hassan in the final 100m to narrowly miss out on taking a third Scottish Schools Cross Country title. He now travels to Loughborough in 2 weeks time to compete for Ayrodynamic Triathlon Club in the British Duathlon Championships. The other top performances of the day came from Louise Hill-Stirling and Louisa Kelly. Louise, representing Girvan Academy, put in a very solid shift to take an excellent 5th place in the over 17 Girls race whilst Louisa, representing Marr College finished in an excellent 17th place in the 14-15 Girls race. Mar 11 2011: Ayr Seaforth Stars Fly High at Glasgow and Sheffield

Ayr Seaforth’s colours were flying high and proudly at the national indoor championships from Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall to Sheffield on Saturday and Sunday.

The main highlights were provided firstly at Sheffield where 16-year-old Andrew Murphy finished second with a new Scottish record in the UK under 17 men’s heptathlon championships with 4727 points, just missing gold by two points and producing five personal best performances from his seven events over two days.

The main highlight at Glasgow was in the under 17 men’s 60 metres sprint final when 16-year-old Sam Revie was first and 15-year-old Wallace Graham finished third, both with personal bests, in a blanket finish in one of the best races of the day.

Murphy gave an outstanding performance at Sheffield. Competing against the top 18 multi-event under 17 athletes in Britain, he smashed the Scottish heptathlon indoor record on his way to silver.

The Girvan Academy pupil was only two points away from gold. Saturday: 60m 4th (7.60 pb); long jump 3rd (6m 24); shot putt 1st (13m 44); high jump 1m 80 (pb).

Sunday: 60m hurdles: 4th (8.62 pb); pole vault 3rd (3m 45 pb); 1000m 3rd (2-48.15 pb),

This is the outstanding performance of the 2010/2011 indoor season for a Scottish under 17 male athlete and great credit must go to Andrew’s coach, master coach Sandy Ewen from Monkton. He predicts a bright future in multi-events for Andrew who was last year’s Scottish multi-events indoor and outdoor under 17 champion.

Back at the Kelvin Hall, Saturday was the under 17 and under 20 national open indoor championships.

Seaforth medal winners were Sam Revie (gold) and Wallace Graham (bronze) in the under 17 men’s 60 metres; James Gaffney (bronze) under 17 men’s shot putt; Rachel Hunter (silver) under 20 women’s shot putt and Meghan Logue (bronze) under 20 women’s 400m and 800m.

Results: U17 men: Sam Revie 1st 60m (7.18 pb); Wallace Graham 3rd 60m (7.24 pb); James Gaffney 3rd shot putt (13m 08); Wallace Graham 5th 200m (24.26, semi-final 23.39).

U17 women: Carolyn Harvey 4th 60m hurdles (semi-final 9.97, heat 9.94 and 5th in 200m (semi-final) 28.82 (heat 28.64 pb); U20 men: Scott Gibson 60m heat 7th (7.78);U20 women: Rachel Hunter 2nd shot putt (11m); Caroline George 4th 60m (7.89, heat 7.87); Meghan Logue 3rd 400m (60.10), 3rd 800m (ntr); Hazel Jamieson 5th high jump (1m 55).

On Sunday, the under 15 national open indoor championships gave 14-year-old Scott McAnally another gold medal in the boys’ high jump (1m 70) to add to last week’s UK indoor gold medal in Birmingham.

Scott then won silver in the shot putt on Sunday with 11m 76 (pb). Scott was Seaforth’s only under 15 boy competing at these championships which was very disappointing.

There was, however, a fair representation from the under 15 girls with the following results:

Alison Leckie 60m 4th (semi-final 8.68) and 200m 4th (semi-final 29.25, heat 28.94); Ailie Shanks 60m 3rd (heat 9.03) and 200m 4th (heat 29.64); Sophie Dunlop 60m 5th (semi-final 8.69, heat 8.60) and 60m hurdles (6th 9.97); Charlotte Crossland 60m 6th (heat 9.18) and 60m hurdles 2nd (semi-final 10.90); Eleanor Jones 200m 4th (heat 29.93).

Seaforth senior men did well to reach the final of the Scottish 4x200m Relay Championships on Sunday, finishing a close fourth in 1.34.1 but a strong Edinburgh AC team powered to win in a fast 1.29.56.

The Seaforth team was Ian Kennedy, Andrew McElwee, Scott Gibson and Jonathan Thompson.

Only two Seaforth athletes took part in an under 13 national open on Sunday and both produced new bests.

Fraser Angus (age 11): 60m 5th (8.76, heat 8.69 pb) and 200m 3rd (29.06 pb); Georgia Brawley (age 11): 60m (semi-final) 3rd (9.20 pb) and 200m (heat) 3rd (31.80.).

Fixtures: Saturday: Scottish Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships at Irvine.

Sunday: Scottish Athletic Indoor League finals at the Kelvin Hall. Seaforth have six age group teams competing in the finals plus teams in an extra 4x200m relay event for all clubs including clubs which failed to qualify for the finals.

Mar 04 2011: Ayr Seaforth’s Under 17 Relay Team are Record Breakers

Ayr Seaforth’s under 17 men sprinters are record breakers.

The 4 x 200 metres team broke the Scottish record and championship best performance not once but twice at the Kelvin Hall on Saturday.

They won the qualifying heat in 1.32.90 and then in the final with an even faster 1.32.09. The previous best time held by Edinburgh AC was 1.32.87 a year earlier.

The victorious team was: Andrew Murphy (23.8), Sam Revie (22.4), Angus Arnold (23.3) and Wallace Graham (22.6).

Runners-up were Giffnock North (1.32.46) while third were last year’s winners Edinburgh AC (1.33.93).

Club secretary and team manager Glen Harrower said he had witnessed many successful Seaforth national relay champions over the years but this team was one of the best. To break the national record and also best championship time made it extra special.

In the Senior Indoor Championships, former Seaforth sprint and triple jump champion Stuart Benson, from Troon, now serving in the RAF, celebrated his 30th birthday by winning the senior men’s 60 metres in 6.98 secs.

Stuart, who was competing for Shaftesbury Harriers, is based at RAF Cosford where he works in the RAF as a PE instructor.

One of his new ambitions is to train and compete in the RAF bobsleigh team as the brake /anchor man.

Rachel Hunter, 17, produced a season’s best to take bronze in the women’s shot putt with 11.54 metres while 16-year-old Caroline George just missed bronze in the women’s 60 metres also with a season’s best 7.88 secs to finish fourth.

Meanwhile, at Birmingham, 14-year-old Scott McAnally was another gold medal winner in the under 15 boys’ high jump with a personal best 1.75 metres.

Scott, who was competing at the AAA / UK Indoor Championships, is still an under 15 competitor but appears to have competed against his elders to win.

Back at the Kelvin Hall, four Seaforth under 13 athletes competed in an indoor under 13 Stadia STAR Challenge competition.

This was an Ayrshire select against teams from all over Scotland and consisted of four boys and four girls from Seaforth, Kilmarnock Harriers and North Ayrshire.

The team finished seventh from eight but their final position did not reflect the overall performance which was faced with two late call-offs. The last minute substitutes performed well as did the entire Ayrshire team in an excellent competition.

Seaforth athletes were: Fraser Angus (60m), Oliver Smith (shot putt), Morgan Fitzsimmons (long jump), Louise Murray (long jump) and Jennifer McVeigh (60m). All eight team members also competed in a medley relay.

February 2011

Feb 25 2011: Ayr Seaforth’s Kirstin Oakley Wins Gold at National XC Championships

Ayr Seaforth had their strongest contingent to date at the National Cross Country Championships at Callendar Park in Falkirk last weekend. Once again, Kirstin Oakley was the outstanding athlete of the day when she romped home to take the Under 13 Girls title in emphatic style with a massive 28 second winning margin. The Prestwick Academy pupil showed great maturity from the start and dominated the 3.2 kilometre race after 1000m to become only the 5th athlete in Seaforth’s history to claim a Scottish Cross Country title. She now heads to Birmingham at the beginning of March to compete in the UK Inter-Counties Championships and the McCains UK Cross Challenge final and will be an exciting prospect for the future. The Under 13 Girls team proved to be the most successful Seaforth team of the day as they took 4th place, narrowly missing out on a bronze team medal. Lisa Rennie continues to improve in every race and finished in an excellent 14th place whilst Christie Hutton finished 42nd. There were national debuts for Siobhan Rae and Amy Palmer who finished 70th and 79th respectively. Louisa Kelly was the first Under 15 Girl home in 46th place despite losing a shoe after about 800m and having to run from the back of the field. Her team mates of Emma Vallely, Leigh McLevy and Laura Meader helped Seaforth to a highly respectable 6th team place. The Under 17 Women’s race saw the second shoe incident of the day for Seaforth. Although not quite in the league of the infamous Brian Whittle shoe loss at the European Championships, it was the turn of Lauren Goldie who completely lost her shoe with 3 kilometres of the race still to go. However she battled on to finish the race with one shoe. In the same race, previous Under 13 champion, Sarah Cassells took a spectacular fall at the half way point but still managed to finish an excellent 22nd place. A strong run from Katie Sprang saw her finish in 29th place and Seaforth take 7th in the team race. Under 20 athlete Louise Hill-Stirling had an incident –free race and put in yet another sterling performance to take 11th place in her first year in this age group.

Highest placed male athlete was Finlay Rae. Still suffering from the effects of flu, the previous Under 13 champion managed to take 16th place in the Under 17 Men’s race. He remains Ayr Seaforth’s top National Cross Country performer of all time, having 3 medals (1 gold and 2 bronze) from 5 appearances. In the same race Euan Webster returned to some form with an excellent 32nd place. The Under 15 quartet of Ben Steven, Andrew Black, James Pettigrew and Shaun Rennie took 9th place with Ben being the highest finisher in 35th place, closely followed by Andrew in 40th place. In the Under 20 Men’s race, Greg Templeton had a strong performance to be top Seaforth finisher in 31st place. Andrew Rae was next home in 41st place, completing his 7th successive national cross country race. Callum Aitkenhead came out of premature racing retirement to finish just behind in 44th place. Laurence Baker was the sole senior athlete and finished in 218th place over the tough 12 kilometre course. Full Seaforth results were:

Ayr Seaforth’s Finlay Rae was in international action for Scotland last weekend at the Celtic Nations Cross Country Championships in Dublin. The 15 year was competing for his country for the 3rd time at Under 17 level in what was possibly the muddiest course any cross country athlete will ever encounter. Still suffering from the recent effects of flu, he put in a trademark gutsy performance to take 7th place and help Scotland’s Under 17 Men secure team gold. The Scottish team had a successful day in managing to take 4 team gold medals from the 6 race series. Finlay will be in action along with other Seaforth endurance athletes this weekend at the National Cross Country Championships in Falkirk.

Ayr Seaforth athletes have been in Cross Country action over the past two weekends. A much improved performance from Kirstin Oakley saw her take the Under 13 Girls title in magnificent style with a 30 second winning margin over the 3.2 kilometre course. A superb run from Lisa Rennie gave her a top-10 finish in 9th place and a strong effort from Christie Hutton earned her 26th spot and a well deserved silver team medal for the Under 13 Girls. The second medal of the day came from Under 17 athlete Finlay Rae who returned to form to take an excellent second spot over the 6.4 kilometre course. He was joined by Euan Webster who finished in a solid 25th place in the same race. The Under 15 girls were represented by Louisa Kelly who ran strongly in her first District Championship to take 17th place and Leigh McLevy who finished in a creditable 30th place. Sarah Cassells was the sole Seaforth finisher in the Under 17 Women’s race. A gutsy performance earned her 13th place. Under 20 athlete Louise Hill Stirling continues to make a big impression in her first year in this age-group. She took an excellent 5th place. In the Senior Women’s race, Toni McIntosh demonstrated her improving fitness with a robust performance which secured her 11th place. In the Under 15 Boys race Ben Steven and Andrew Black had a close fought race with Ben coming out top in the end in 28th place and Andrew only 3 seconds behind in 29th. For the first time since the series began they brought back 2 medals to Ayrshire. Under 13 athlete, Kirstin was unlucky not to claim top spot as she was narrowly beaten on the line into second place over the relatively short 1.8 kilometre distance. She ran a near perfect race in the frozen foggy conditions. However, she can now look forwards to the final in Birmingham in March knowing that another similar performance will put her in contention for a podium finish. Finlay Rae also put in a stunning shift against the top Irish and English athletes. Despite feeling less than 100% with a viral illness his trademark gutsy performance gave him a well deserved silver medal in a tight race at the front. He will now travel to Dublin at the beginning of February to represent Scotland at the Celtic Nations Cross Country International, earning his 3rd Scottish vest in the process.

Jan 14 2011: Ayr Seaforth Athletes Star at Holyrood Park

Ayr Seaforth athletes revelled in the spectacular setting of Holyrood Park which again hosted the Bupa Great Edinburgh cross country races.

The event included the International Team Challenge (GB v USA v Rest of Europe) and the Scottish Inter-District cross country championships.

While Kenyan Eluid Kipchoge and Britain's Mo Farah were dominating the elite international races, Seaforth's junior endurance stars were focusing on representing Scotland West in the Inter-District Championships.

Under 13 star Kirstin Oakley was first to brave the snow and freezing conditions, putting in an excellent performance over the 2.5k course to take bronze after being narrowly beaten on the line for second place. Both athletes were given the same time of 10.16.

Triathlete Finlay Rae also put in a sterling performance to finish a superb fifth in the under 17 men's race, completing the 3.7k course in 12.42. The performance was extra special as he had spent the previous day competing in the National Short Course Swim Championships for South Ayrshire swim team.

Louise Hill-Stirling had the toughest job of the day. The 17-year-old Girvan athlete had a baptism of fire racing against an international field which included Linet Masai and Genzebe Dibaba after her late call-up to the Scotland West team. However, she acquitted herself well over the 6k course to finish 51st in 26.29.

This weekend sees the re-scheduled West District Cross Country Championships at Irvine while the following weekend Finlay Rae and Kirstin Oakley travel to Antrim in Northern Ireland for the next round of the McCains UK Cross Country Challenge.
